Working in-house at a law firm gave me a unique insight into the workings of different departments, the offerings of the various legal services and, most importantly, the journey website users take when searching for and finding a law firm to represent them.

Is law firm SEO different from other industries?

While the same basic rules apply for meeting the demands of Google’s algorithms, law firm SEO does require a specific approach in order to be successful. People searching for a law firm will often be very specific in what they search for, as most have individual circumstances such as the type of legal help they require, their location and their financial situation (e.g. those looking for legal aid vs. those looking for a private lawyer). Any good SEO strategy needs to keep these unique audience needs in mind.

Why is SEO important for law firms?

The Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are incredibly competitive for law firms. With the major players dominating the top three positions for so many keywords, any law firm looking to break into those top spots needs to be proactive with their SEO strategy.

There are endless opportunities for law firms, with thousands of people searching for legal services on Google every day, so without a proper SEO strategy, your law firm could be missing out on a major opportunity.

With searches for a lawyer being so competitive, PPC advertising can be incredibly expensive, with some keywords costing hundreds of pounds per click. By getting your site to rank organically, you’ll be getting those clicks for free.

How can law firms track the effectiveness of their SEO strategy and measure the return on investment (ROI)?

As an SEO Consultant, it’s my job to ensure you understand how your site is performing organically as the strategy evolves. There are three main areas to look at:

Keyword rankings: After conducting in-depth keyword research, I will be tracking your keyword rankings over time. We will expect to see improvements to rankings site-wide, as well as diving into the individual keywords being worked on each month.

Organic traffic: As rankings start to improve and we take a strategic approach to the content being produced, organic traffic will start to increase.

Organic conversions: The main focus will, of course, be to increase the leads coming through the website. In order to understand the ROI of your SEO campaigns, you’ll need to know the conversion rate of your website leads and the average value of each conversion.

I use a variety of tools to track the success of the SEO campaign, from Google Analytics to Search Console and Semrush. You’ll receive monthly reports and regular catch-ups to discuss the strategy.
